It's the Great Pumpkin, Ai Ohio

On Friday, October 29, Ai Ohio staff and faculty participated in a mini pumpkin decorating competition. Creativity was on display with these winning entries:

With characteristic wit, Director of Housing and Residential Life Kathleen Housing took home the "Scariest" and "Best Overall" prizes for her entry, Bed Bugs.

 

College store student worker Katelyn Markham hit the trifecta, winning recognition for "Most Beautiful," "Most Creative" and "Most Awesome Carving" for Cinderella's Carriage.

 

 

 Surprisingly, dark horse Robin Krout was awarded the "The President Did This One So We Better Give It An Award" prize for her entry, "Ghost."

The "Most Humourous" and "President's Award" prizes went to event-organizer Duff Orlemann for his entry, "Road Kill."

 

Lena Turner was awarded "Most Original" for her creation, "Blowfish."

SFS Student Worker Josh Sturgess-Meyers went old-school for his winning entry "Papa Smurf," which was recognized for "Best Paint Job."

Attention Ai Ohio Faculty and Staff: I’d like to recruit anyone who’s interested in playing competitive volleyball to form one of two teams. Significant others and friends are welcome to participate as well. One would be a men’s team and the other a coed team, three women and three men. GE Park, on route 747 in Tri-County, just to the north of Tri-County Mall and I-275, is where the leagues take place. The men’s league is on Tuesday nights and the coed league is on Wednesday nights. If you know the basics like perimeter defense, the difference between a 6-2 and a 5-1 offense and all six service zones, then this is for you. If you don’t know what these things are but are willing and able to learn them, you’re more than welcome to join in the fun. I’ve been playing volleyball since 1992 and have been coaching youth volleyball since 1996, so I can bring you up to speed. We’ll start out in the “C” league (recreational) and if we do well in that session, move up to the “B” league (more competitive) in the next session and beyond.

Each team will need a minimum of six (6) players to sign up, with a maximum of nine (9) for subs. Subs can be used in specific positions, or rotate in each game or be back-ups in case one of the main six can’t make it on a given week. The cost will be between $50 to $72 each for a 10 week session. Matches consist of four (4) games to 25 points, win by two with a 27 point cap. Games start approximately at 5:30, 6:50, 8:10 and 9:30 p.m. The current USAV rules will apply. GE Park is located at 12110 Princeton Pike, Cincinnati, Ohio 45246, and has free parking, locker rooms and four wood courts. I’ll have a start date for the next session soon.

Uniforms are not required, however, we could get matching T-shirts from the Supply Store to wear as uniforms and I can get them numbered too. This would also help promote Ai as there are some high school age kids who are in the men’s league. League champions receive a GEEAA League Champions T-shirts.

Congrats to faculty member Erik Sprowls and the student members of the Video Club, who were awarded a prestigious Telly Award for their work Culinary Delights - Living the Drea.

1st Annual (?) Ai Ohio Cornhole Tourney

On Friday, August 20, staff and faculty took part in the Pep-Squad sponsored Corn-Hole Tournament. A good time was had by all who participated in and cheered the bracket-style competion. The big winners were "The Team Who Beat Us," composed of ADAs Chad DeFife and Barry Parnell. For their efforts, each was rewarded with a $20 gift certificate to the college store. Congratulations, guys!

Mystery Suitcase Lands Parker-Wolery in National News

While she just wanted to return a relic from her childhood to its rightful owner, Assistant Professor in Art Foundations Amanda Parker-Wolery found herself in center of a media frenzy two weeks ago. After a Labor Day trip to visit her father during which she rediscovered the mystery briefcase, a friend shared the story with a reporter with the Enquirer. After there, it got picked up by the local news, and pretty soon someone from World News with Diane Sawyer was calling.

Long story short - Amanda was able to return the briefcase to its rightful owner, who plans to use the contents to find out more about her father and her lineage.

Andy Warhol said everyone gets their 15 minutes ... We think Amanda deserves more, not just for this act of kindness, but for the dedication and generosity of spirit she shows her students and co-workers everyday, which was clearly demonstrated in this story.

Familiar Face on Bearcats Sidelines

Next time you're watching a UC Bearcats home game on FS Ohio, keep your eyes peeled for a familiar face. Media Services Coordinator Doug Baines is operating a camera. Sound like a glamourous job ... maybe. Doug has to be at the stadium at 5 a.m. and risk getting tackled by a 300-pound lineman. I'll watch from the comfort of a seat ... or my couch. :)

Flip Flop Day 2010 A Success

More than 15 staff and faculty participated in Flip Flop Day 2010. Prizes were awarded in 6 competitive categories. Winners received a Target gift card and personalized certificate.

Staff & Faculty Picnic 2010

Those who were able to make it to the Staff & Faculty Picnic on Friday, July 17 at Symmes Township park were able to survive the heat and humidity, enjoy some great food and have a lot of fun.
